The Ellington Kid - 6 Frame analysis

FRAME 1 - KNIFE BEAT MEAT


SOUND : knife bangs and drags across cutting board - suggestion of violence/attack
              bang is repeated - imitate footsteps or something approaching/threatening                              silence in the background is ominous
SCREEN : lighting puts person in darker shade - only hands shown/no identity - suggest something sinister about them
                  raw meat is slightly gruesome image 
                  bigger knife - connotations of something brutal "big motherfucking knife"
        

FRAME 2 - BEEFY N NATHAN


SOUND : shuffling - Beefy sitting down - natural sense of realism
SCREEN : contrast between characters - almost comically opposite (characteristically and physically)
                  able to use stereotypes in order to understand characters quickly
                  Nathan wears over sized leather jacket and baggy jeans - unfitting (feeble/clown)
                  Beefy wears matching tracksuit n cap - street wear - bright suggest friendliness (serious/tough)
                  

FRAME 3 - KID IN ALLEY


SOUND : low strings - ominous
                footsteps drag - approaching (like the knife to meat)
SCREEN  : boys face in dark - suggestion of hopelessness/ending
                   going towards the light - safety 
                   street light at end - similar image to light at the end of the tunnel (kebab shop)
                   he limps at angle - struggle or in pain
                   stereotypes of black male w hood up at night - in trouble/caused trouble -has been stabbed

FRAME 4 - KEBAB BOYS V. SKENGMAN


SOUND : telling kebab man to move - at first you think they are dominant
SCREEN : crossed arms - unaffected/not going to move - now he has power 
                  red shirts match red chairs (between guys in black) - suggest they are completely surrounded / connotations of blood
                    groups are opposite each other - suggest conflict/fight to come
                  opposing - tension in the stillness of kebab


FRAME 5 - VEXED


SOUND : Nathan's narrative
SCREEN : mouth covered but from slanted eyes can see anger - maybe shouting
                  violent/trying to threaten - one pointing knife and one pointing fingers
                  faces covered - up to no good - suggest gang violence 
                  dark attire matches them w darkness outside - don't belong inside shop

FRAME 6 - KEBAB MAN IS WATCHING


SOUND : instruments crescendo - mirror the climax and impending doom of the lil gang 
SCREEN : boy takes his mask down - face of defeat - he has acknowledged his loss
                  do not underestimate the kebab boys (now men) 
                  kebab man in red behind is the impending doom - not in focus yet
                  red - blood/death 
                  postures are contrasted - in red is relaxed - in black is now less confident
